FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q1 - Where are the shocks made supplied by Racing Shocks Australia?
A1 - All shocks sold are manufactured in the USA or the UK & serviced locally by us. We sell premium products, not cheap brands that end up in land fill within months due to the use of inferior materials & poor manufacturing tolerances. We deal directly with the manufacturers, ensuring what we supply is ideally suited to your application
Q2 - What is the difference with cheaper brands to our premium models?
A2 - Ours are of higher build quality & designed for motorsport. Various other brands are manufactured from the same overseas manufacturing facility. The high-volume production leads to large build tolerances, which cause the shock to feel harsh, poor adjustment range or poor matching to each other. Often these brands are marketed as motorsport shocks but are designed for street work unlike ours, we are 100% compatible with motorsport applications. Our shocks are of a modular design, rebuildable, serviceable & can be custom tuned. The high precision tolerances & how they are designed make the shocks extremely efficient internally, increasing grip & longevity of the units. Short term they are more expensive, long term you will never need to replace them
Q3 - Do we sell complete coil over units??
A3 - Every car & owner is unique in what they want. We specifically cater for this by selling a shock setup for the application desired, then add on mounts, springs etc. We can supply the whole kit or individual items only.
Q4 - My car currently uses a separate spring to shock location. Can this be converted to coil over setup?
A4 - Some cars are suitable, other cars require more reinforcement at the top mounts or strengthening of brackets. For example, BMW E46 models are prone to cracking the rear strut towers. Ford Mustang late models are prone to shearing off the bolts at the rear shock top mount. We have solutions for various application.
Q5 - Why are some shocks mounted with the body inverted (body to the top)?
A5 - This is a normal practice in motorsport to reduce un-sprung weight (moving suspension parts) to improve ride frequency & response. This can only work if the shock is a gas monotube design or twin tube design with a separate oil/gas area. The majority of the shocks we supply are of monotube design & gas charged.
Q6 - What warranty is available with the shocks through Racing Shocks Australia?
A6 - Generally for motorsport applications, most manufacturers supply a maximum of 12 months warranty. We provide a 2-year motorsport warranty on seals & internal component operation exclusive of crash damage or excursions, only on the Motion Control Suspension dampers & JRi Shocks if bought through us. No extended warranty is available if sold via 3rd parties, overseas dealers whether new or used. Only Racing Shocks Australia are the official Australian sales distributor & service representative for MCS/JRi Shocks.
Q7 - How often do the shocks require servicing?
A7 - Often seals leak due to heat cycles causing the seals to deteriorate before the oil does & depends on the use of the vehicle. Often owners at professional levels will have their shocks serviced every 1 to 2 years. If the car only sees occasional track use & more street use, these could last up to 5 years with no issue.
Q8 - Apart from dyno testing, are there any other maintenance requirements needed?
A8 - Keeping the shocks clean after each event by removing dirt & mud from the shafts & body threads using a rust inhibitor lubricant (not brake clean) will ensure the seals stay fresh. We recommend getting the shocks dyno tested once a year or whenever they have seen a major off track excursion that causes the car to DNF or retire from an event. Pay particular attention to dirt around the adjusters especially when it rains.
Q9 - What is the minimum gas pressure required & does it need to be checked?
A9 - It depends on the design of the shock. The main reason it requires gas is to prevent cavitation. If the unit does not have a Schrader valve, these are usually maintenance free. Those with Schrader valves should be checked before each event & can be used as a tuning tool at the track depending on the track characteristics & grip level available. We also sell tools & equipment to check the gas pressure.
Q10 - Can anyone import these shocks from overseas?
A10 - We will not offer additional warranty on items purchased from overseas dealers. All claims must be supplied with a copy of receipt of purchase detailing the dealer & date they were purchased. Shocks with gas are considered DANGEROUS GOODS & should be de-pressurized before shipping. They can incur additional freight charges as a result if the correct paperwork is not supplied. The place of origin of manufacture can also affect the freight cost & duty payable. We regularly ship items from the USA every few weeks so out of stock items can be replenished in a reasonable time frame.
